Community Service Opportunities

In our tumultuous times education strategies have to be focused on building up community and restoring our connection with nature and its resources. Connecting with people in our local communities can bring meaning to students’ activities. Please consider the following opportunities for your students and families, and feel free to add and include any organizations and projects you may know of which need volunteers.

1. OAEC in Occidental has a volunteer day every Wednesday that features work in the garden and a delicious vegetarian lunch. During these days adults must supervise younger students. This is a great opportunity to learn about every aspect of gardening and farming, sustainability, permaculture and art, and to have a fun time in nature.

2. A creative group of young and not so young people is running the “Daily Acts” project. Besides monthly tours they provide information about community events that need volunteers. They also have their own magazine, “Ripples,” which is free and can be obtained at Laguna Farms and other places in Sebastopol. Their website is www.daily-acts.org

3. Sebastopol Interchurch Pantry provides opportunities for students to help homeless and poor people. Contact person is Lil Ogden , and her tel. # 823-2285

 4. Participants in the Ceres Project at the Sebastopol Community Church prepare food for people with terminal illnesses. Twice a week on Wednesday and Thursday in the Church’s kitchen high school students (and older) can learn and participate in cooking.

They need volunteers constantly and you can find information at ceresproject.org or

contact Judy Perrera at 823-7784, and Cathryn at 799-7489

5.Creek Stewardship Program in Santa Rosa offers Spirit Creek walks and restoration activities in the Russian River watershed. For information and sign ups contact Michelle Keip at 544-2673 or michelle@wellspringai.com.

6. Redwood Empire Food Bank desperately needs volunteers to help with food collection and distribution. They have a great network in the Santa Rosa, Sebastopol, and Rohnert Park areas. For information and registration see http://www.refb.org/

7. The Farmers Market in Santa Rosa needs volunteers to pick up fruit and vegetables after the market is closed, on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The contact person is Anna Stufflebeam and her phone # is 824-0816.

 8. Our school’s host, Community Baptist Church has to be included as well. It would be a great opportunity for our students to learn about their community network. Please contact Rev. James Coffee.
