MATH 4-5: Wednesdays, 9-10am
This class will cover a combination of 4th and 5th grade standards. During weekly class, there will be an introduction to concepts, hands-on activities and problem solving experiences. All work will be completed during class time. Topics for the first semester include: Numbers and Operations with Whole Numbers, Numbers and Operations with Fractions, Numbers and Operations with Decimals.

Math 4/5 1/27/16
We started out our class today with a few problem solving activity from Write It Math. We discussed strategy, keywords, how to explain our answers, facts, and review of work. The students did a great job of working through challenging problems together! Then we finished our game of Addition and Subtraction of Fractions Jeopardy from last week.

Math Class 4/5 1/13/16
Class began with a demonstration of fractions towers, that are manipulatives used to model equivalent fractions, as well as addition and subtraction of fractions. Afterwards students broke into groups and completed 3 stations. The first was using the fraction towers to solve real-world fraction problems. Students had to solve problems and model how they found the answers. The second was an equivalent fraction concentration game. The last was a game called Here There and Everywhere, and students need to create word problems for their partners to solve.

Math class 4/5 1/6/16
We spent the entire class today playing Fraction Bingo. Students explored concepts including: equivalent fractions, mixed numbers, improper fractions, addition and subtractions of fractions with like denominators, addition and subtraction of fractions with unlike denominators, and comparing fractions.

Math 4/5 12/16/15
Class began with a variety of strategic problem solving activities. Students solved Magic squares and riddles, using a variety of clues. Next, we played a very exciting game of Jeopardy. Students were in two teams and they worked together to solve problems including: Operations in Base Ten, Operations with Fractions, Geometry, Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Measurement and Data.

Math 4/5 12/9/15
We had a great class today! Students worked together to solve real- world problems comparing fractions. We used fraction circles to model fractional parts and compare the parts remaining and the parts removed. Then students completed a worksheet where they created inequalities. Afterwards, we played a game called Comparing Fraction Challenge where students rolled the dice and made fractions, and then whoever had the greater fraction was the winner. Finally, we played Pico Fermi Bagels with a four digit number.

Math Class 4/5 12/2/15
Today in class we learned about Function Tables. The students worked together to figure out rules for Input Output Tables. I also introduced x and y, to represent the input an output. Students created tables with their own rules, and left some numbers out, so their neighbors had to guess. Click on the link to see a picture:)
At the end of the class, we played Pico Fermi Bagels.

Math 4/5 11/18/15
Students completed their symmetry designs from the last class. Next, they completed some MARS tasks to show and apply their understanding of symmetry.
Then, students played a variety of math games in pairs. One of the games involved creating story problems using different operations. The other game involved finding common division problems. Finally, we played Pico Fermi Bagels, with a four digit number.

Math 4/5 11/4/15
Students discussed and learned about symmetry. Next, students made designs out of pattern blocks, and a partner then continued the design using symmetry. Finally, students created the complete designs using pattern block stickers on paper. The students created very intricate designs and didn't quite finish.

Today in Math class we continued to work with divisibility rules and prime factorization. Students made rectangles (arrays) showing all of the different factors of a variety of numbers. They discovered that prime numbers only had 2 shapes, and also discovered that certain numbers made squares:)
As a whole group we completed a MARS task involving solving number problems with multiplication and division in a real context.
Finally, we played PICO FERMI BAGELS, with a four digit number.

Math 4/5
Today in class we played "Guess My Rule" to introduce prime and composite numbers. Then we learned about prime factors and created factor trees by using prime factorization. After the lesson, students worked in small groups to play the "Feed the Factor Tree" game. The object of the game was to fill in all of the blank circles on the factor tree, by using the sum of dice or a factor of the sum. Finally, we played Pico, Fermi, Bagels with a four digit number.

Math class 4/5:
Today in class we played a game called "Guess My Rule" where I drew a circle on the board and the students guess numbers between one and one hundred. If their guess fits my rule, the number goes inside the circle, if not its placed on the outside. All of the rules related to divisibility. Next, we reviewed the divisibility rules that were introduced last week, and students each chose a different number to create a "Divisibility Rule" poster, which included: describing the rule, giving examples and decorations. Finally, students completed "Sum Bugs", a MARS task (Performance Task) applying all of the rules that they had just worked on:)

Math 4/5 9/30/15
Today in class we learned the Divisibility rules through investigation and lecture.
Next, the students played a game in partners where they had to roll two dice and spin a spinner. The number on the dice is then made into a two digit number that is hopefully divisible by the number on the spinner. The student gets the points of the sum of the two dice, if it works. If not, they get a zero for that round.
Finally, we played Pico, Fermi Bagels.

Math 4/5 9/16/15
This week we played a variety of games involving factors.
Next, we completed a MARS task, where we analyzed a game board where two players played a factor game and determined who would win based on the numbers they rolled. Finally, we ended the class with a game of Pico Fermi Bagels.

Math 4-5 9/9/15
Today we spent the class playing ice breaking games to get to know each other and to feel comfortable working together in groups. Students created designs with pattern blocks. Students broke up into pairs and played a board game that focused on basic skills. We also played Pico Fermi Bagels, a favorite number problem solving game, that we end every class with.
