Mussorgsky got the idea for this composition in a special way. He had a friend who was an artist. His friend died. After his death, Mussorgsky went to an exhibition of his friend's paintings. Mussorgsky wanted this composition to tell about his walk in the art gallery and the paintings he saw. He went home to his piano and composed Pictures at an Exhibition.

The next section describes the first painting which shows a small Gnome with crooked legs whose movements are strange and are accompanied by savage shrieks.

Mussorgsky's music was so descriptive that it stimulated Ravel's imagination. Ravel decided to use the instruments of the orchestra to help us see the pictures Mussorgsky composed for the piano. Do you think Mussorgsky would have liked Ravel's idea?
